A form of pollination in which the pollen is
carried by water. Hydrophily is very rare but
occurs in a few aquatic species. In Canadian
pondweed Elodea and tape grass Vallisneria,
the male flowers break off whole and rise to
the water surface where they encounter the
female flowers which are borne on long
stalks. In eel grasses Zostera, which are
coastal plants growing totally submerged, the
filamentous pollen grains are released into
the water and carried by currents to the
female flowers where they become wrapped
around the stigmas.
